Who invented the barbecue grill? ›

George Stephen went on to create the first modern BBQ grill in 1952, he was a welder at Weber Brothers Metal Works in Illinois. He cut a metal buoy in half to make a grill that was dome-shaped, he welded three steel legs onto the dome and then he used the top half as a lid to the grill.

The First Gas Grill

In 1959, the same manufacturer fitted gas grills with a 20lb propane tank to make a portable gas grill and during this same decade, several other manufacturers, including Walter Koziol's Modern Home Products® and Bernzomatic® began selling consumer gas grills.

But what about BBQ, well BBQ as we know it that is meat cooked over a grill or pit, covered in spices and basting sauce originated in the Caribbean. The word barbecue comes from the language of a Caribbean Indian tribe called the Taino. Their word for grilling on a raised wooden platform is barbacoa.
